The origin of pinball machines can be traced all the way back to France in the 1700s from a game known as ‘Bagatelle”.
By the 1920s, manufacturers began to produce coin-operated pinball machines. This is where pinball machines exploded in popularity, reaching a mass audience. By the end of the 1920s, there were 150 separate companies making pinball machines. However, the 1940s saw the introduction of bans on pinball machines in the U.S. The machines were made illegal due to fears they promoted gambling. However, with reinventions such as the introduction of flippers, manufacturers were eventually able to convince judges that the game did indeed involve skill and not just gambling.
Popular ARCADE GAME
Although pinball machines saw their most popular years in the 1990s, they have recently bounced back in terms of popularity. The last decade has seen growth in the number of players, especially competitively. 2006 saw 500 players in 50 competitions worldwide. By 2017 the figure was 55,000 players across 4,500 competitions.
While the game’s popularity has indeed declined since the 1990s, there are still more than 55,000 competitive players across the world. This means that pinball is still a popular arcade game, and should remain so for years to come.
